The rendered fat from cattle is being bottled up and sold as skincare.

Users claim it is the secret ingredient to hydrated and healthy skin.

Laura Wright is the co-founder of Tuttofare, known for its tallow balm, which uses 100 per cent Australian grass-fed beef tallow.

It is also mixed with other ingredients likes jojoba oil and coco butter, to help mask the meaty smell.

“It’s rich in fat soluble vitamins and fatty acids which are very compatible with our skin,” Wright said.

“Over the past 12 to 18 months, we’ve had a big rise in interest, and I think this is driven by people who want more simple and natural skincare routines.

“People are looking really closely at the ingredients in their products and they’re finding simple products can actually work really well for them.”

For some people it works wonders, but for others, beef tallow can be pore clogging, especially in acne-prone or oily skin types.

The high concentration of saturated fats can trap debris and bacteria, worsening acne or folliculitis.

7NEWS asked 25 dermatologists if they would recommend beef tallow, and all said no.

One of Brisbane’s leading dermatologists, Dr Shobhan Manoharan, said there have been no scientific studies on beef tallow.

“I personally do not recommend beef tallow.”

“We know there are some good features to beef tallow, some acids that can help your skin, there are some vitamins in there.

“But it’s not been studied, we have no idea on the concentrations and that’s the thing that worries me.”

“Personally, I would recommend picking up some formulated products that have good hyaluronic acids, glycerines, niacinamides and ceramides.

“These are all nourishing skincare molecules very well formulated, very well tested.”
