Trump declares ceasefire between Iran and Israel after US military base in Qatar attacked

‘As of now, there is NO ‘agreement’ on any ceasefire or cessation of military operations.’

US President Donald Trump has announced a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, soon after after thanking Iran for providing “early notice” of a missile attack on a US military base in Qatar.

However, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said there was currently no ceasefire agreement with Israel, but said Iran would stop its military response if Israel halted its “illegal aggression” on Iran by 4am local time.

“As Iran has repeatedly made clear: Israel launched war on Iran, not the other way around,” Araghchi said in a post on X.

“As of now, there is NO ‘agreement’ on any ceasefire or cessation of military operations.”

“We have no intention to continue our response afterwards,” Araghchi said, referring to the 4am deadline.

“The final decision on the cessation of our military operations will be made later,” he said.

Iran’s state-aligned Tasnim news agency reported that Israel had launched multiple strikes on the Iranian capital Tehran after Trump announced the ceasefire. Meanwhile Israel’s emergency services said three people were killed by an Iranian strike on a residential building later on Tuesday, making the ceasefire timeline unclear.

Trump says Israel and Iran approached him for ceasefire

Following Iran’s dismissal of the the ceasefire announcement, Trump made an impassioned post about brining peace to the Middle East, claiming the leaders of Israel and Iran had sought the agreement from him.

“Israel & Iran came to me, almost simultaneously, and said, ‘PEACE!’ I knew the time was NOW. The World, and the Middle East, are the real WINNERS! Both Nations will see tremendous LOVE, PEACE, AND PROSPERITY in their futures,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

“They have so much to gain, and yet, so much to lose if they stray from the road of RIGHTEOUSNESS & TRUTH. The future for Israel & Iran is UNLIMITED, & filled with great PROMISE. GOD BLESS YOU BOTH!”

Trump’s ceasefire announcement

Trump earlier issued a statement on Truth Social, stating that a ceasefire had been “fully agreed” by both countries and marks the end of the current conflict.

“CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE! It has been fully agreed by and between Israel and Iran that there will be a Complete and Total CEASEFIRE (in approximately 6 hours from now, when Israel and Iran have wound down and completed their in progress, final missions!), for 12 hours, at which point the War will be considered, ENDED!” Trump’s statement reads.

“Officially, Iran will start the CEASEFIRE and, upon the 12th Hour, Israel will start the CEASEFIRE and, upon the 24th Hour, an Official END to THE 12 DAY WAR will be saluted by the World. During each CEASEFIRE, the other side will remain PEACEFUL and RESPECTFUL.

“On the assumption that everything works as it should, which it will, I would like to congratulate both Countries, Israel and Iran, on having the Stamina, Courage, and Intelligence to end, what should be called, “THE 12 DAY WAR.” This is a War that could have gone on for years, and destroyed the entire Middle East, but it didn’t, and never will! God bless Israel, God bless Iran, God bless the Middle East, God bless the United States of America, and GOD BLESS THE WORLD!”

Iran’s UN mission declined to comment on Trump’s ceasefire announcement, and the Israeli mission said it had no immediate comment.

Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani secured Tehran’s agreement during a call with Iranian officials, an official briefed on the negotiations told Reuters.

Trump told Qatar’s emir that Israel had agreed to the ceasefire, according to the official.

Hours earlier, three Israeli officials had signalled Israel was looking to wrap up its campaign in Iran soon and had passed the message on to the United States.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel was “very, very close to completing” its goals.

A senior Iranian official told Reuters that Tehran had agreed to the US-proposed ceasefire.

Albanese responds to ceasefire announcement

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Australia “welcomes” the ceasefire agreement Trump says has been reached between Israel and Iran.

“Australia welcomes President Trump’s announcement of a ceasefire between Israel and Iran,” Albanese said in a statement.

“We have consistently called for dialogue, diplomacy and de-escalation.

“The safety of Australians in the region is our priority.

“We continue to closely monitor the situation in the Middle East and are deeply concerned about keeping Australians safe.

Trump says ceasefire will last ‘forever’

In an interview with NBC News tonight, Trump said the ceasefire between Iran and Israel marks “a great day for the Middle East” and that he expects it to be “unlimited”.

“It’s a great day for America. It’s a great day for the Middle East. I’m very happy to have been able to get the job done,” Trump said. “A lot of people were dying, and it was only going to get worse. It would have brought the whole Middle East down.”

“I think the ceasefire is unlimited. It’s going to go forever,” he said, adding that the war is over and saying he doesn’t think the two countries “will ever be shooting at each other again”.

Iran strikes US military base

Hours before Trump’s ceasefire announcement, Iran’s military said it had carried out a “devastating and powerful” missile attack on the Al-Udeid US air base in Qatar, after explosions were heard across the Qatari capital.

Iranian authorities had issued threats to retaliate against the United States after US bombers dropped bunker-busters on Iranian underground nuclear sites at the weekend, joining Israel’s air war against Iran.

Qatar’s defence minister, quoted by al-Jazeera TV, said its air defences had intercepted missiles directed at the Al-Udeid air base, the largest US military installation in the Middle East, situated across the Gulf from Iran.

Qatari authorities said there were no casualties in the attack, which it condemned and said it reserved the right to respond.

US officials also said there had been no US casualties.

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Iran will not surrender as it has not violated other countries and would not accept violations.

“We will not surrender to anyone’s violation; this is the logic of the nation of Iran,” reads a statement on Khamenei’s X account, which was accompanied by a picture of a burning American flag with buildings behind it also ablaze.

Trump says

“Israel & Iran came to me, almost simultaneously, and said, ‘PEACE!’ I knew the time was NOW. The World, and the Middle East, are the real WINNERS! Both Nations will see tremendous LOVE, PEACE, AND PROSPERITY in their futures.”“They have so much to gain, and yet, so much to lose if they stray from the road of RIGHTEOUSNESS & TRUTH. The future for Israel & Iran is UNLIMITED, & filled with great PROMISE. GOD BLESS YOU BOTH!” the president wrote.

Trump thanks Iran following attack on US targets

US President Donald Trump on Monday thanked Iran for “early notice” of the country’s “very weak” attack on the US air base in Qatar, adding that he would like Tehran to “proceed to Peace and Harmony in the Region, and I will enthusiastically encourage Israel to do the same”.

“NO Americans were harmed, and hardly any damage was done” in the Iranian missile attack, Trump added.

“Most importantly, they’ve gotten it all out of their ‘system,’ and there will, hopefully, be no further HATE. I want to thank Iran for giving us early notice, which made it possible for no lives to be lost, and nobody to be injured,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

In a second post on Truth Social, Trump thanked the Emir of Qatar for “all that he has done in seeking Peace for the Region.” In a third, the president wrote: “CONGRATULATIONS WORLD, IT’S TIME FOR PEACE!”

The attack came shortly after Qatar closed its airspace as a precaution and the US and UK urged its citizens in the country to “shelter in place”.

Australia condemns Iran’s strike

Foreign Minister Penny Wong has issued a statement on X to condemn Iran’s strikes on US targets.

“Australia condemns Iran’s strikes on US bases in Qatar and Iraq,” Wong’s statement reads.

“We do not want to see further escalation. A full-scale war in the Middle East would be devastating for the people of the region and the world.

“Australia continues to call for de-escalation, dialogue and diplomacy.

“Iran co-ordinated its strikes on US bases, prompting the air space closure, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters on Monday.”

Action taken to minimise casualites

The New York Times, which first reported the co-ordination, said Iran took the action to minimise casualties.

Just before the explosions, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian wrote on the social platform X: “We neither initiated the war nor seeking it. But we will not leave invasion to the great Iran without answer”.

In addition, the US Ain al-Asad air base in Iraq had activated its air defence system out of concern of a potential attack, military sources told Reuters.

Earlier on Monday, Israel bombed a jail for political prisoners in Tehran in a potent demonstration that it was expanding its targets beyond military and nuclear sites to aim squarely at the pillars of Iran’s ruling system.

Despite Iran’s threats to challenge oil shipments from the Gulf, oil prices largely held steady, suggesting traders doubted Iran would follow through on any action that would disrupt global supplies.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow as Iran sought backing from one of its last major power friends for its next steps.
