There are delays of up to 45 minutes as buses replace trains on two lines.

Commuters in Melbourne’s northeast are expecting another day of public transport disruptions due to a train derailment which has not yet been fixed.

A train came off the tracks at the inner-city suburb of Clifton Hill on Sunday evening, impacting both the Mernda and Hurstbridge lines.

Buses have been replacing trains on both lines, with disruptions continuing during peak hour on Tuesday morning as authorities work to remove the impacted train.

A 500-tonne crane is currently at Clifton Hill, located about 4km from Melbourne’s CBD area, to lift the derailed train onto the back of an 18-wheel, flatbed truck.

Major disruptions for commuters

Passengers who normally use the Mernda or Hurstbridge lines should expect delays of up to 45 minutes on Tuesday morning.

Hurstbridge line travellers will need to use buses between Eltham and Parliament stations, while replacement buses will service Mernda passengers between Reservoir and Parliament.

Trains will continue to operate between Mernda and Reservoir and Hurstbridge and Eltham, the transport department said, however delays are expected.

“We ask passengers planning travel this evening to check station platform displays, listen for announcements, and allow extra time for their journey,” the department said.

“Motorists are asked to be vigilant for extra pedestrians and buses around train stations on the Mernda and Hurstbridge lines.”

Commuters can check for updates via the Metro Trains website.
