On Thursday afternoon, police said the 57-year-old’s body had been recovered by divers near one of the waterfalls.

“At this stage, police do not believe the death to be suspicious and was the result of a medical incident,” they said.

“The Northern Territory Police Force would like to pass on our condolences to the family and thank the members of the public ... for their support.”

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

Edith Falls is a series of cascading waterfalls and pools on the Edith River in Nitmiluk National Park, about 60km north of Katherine.

It is also the finish line of the popular Jetbula walking trail.

Water depth at the falls can reach 25m, with the ABC reporting the man’s body was discovered by divers at a depth of 21m.

Police said the upper and lower pools of Edith Falls and the walking track to the upper pools would remain closed for the rest Thursday.

The areas are expected to be reopened to the public on Friday.
