Australia Post has announced it plans to resume deliveries to the United States and it’s overseas territories after it halted all transit shipping amid Tariff turmoil.

The national postage service initially announced it would halt services to the US last month, along with 30 other countries, after changes the US Government made to customs and import tariff rules at the end of August.

On Tuesday, Australia Post made the shock announcement that it will now be working with a third-party provider, Zonos, to offer Australia Post Business Contract and My Post Business customers a “solution to meet the new rules” and allow deliveries to the US to resume.

Zonos is one of a limited number of authorised US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Universal Postal Union third-party providers.

“Along with more than 190 other postal providers internationally, we’ve been caught in a fast-moving situation not of our making,” Australia Post Executive General Manager, Gary Starr, said.

“The real impact has been on our customers who export their goods to the US accessing our cost-efficient postal service, so we’ve been working around the clock to find a solution.”

Australia Post said postal sending to the US and its overseas territories, including Puerto Rico, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, US Virgin Islands and US Minor Outlying Islands, will resume on or before September 25.

“Our priority has always been to have a solution up and running as soon as possible, while keeping our customers updated and informed. We want to provide customers with as much notice as possible to prepare and facilitate their business planning,” Starr said.

“While we are planning to lift the temporary suspension on Thursday 25 September, if we are able to lift this earlier, we absolutely will.”

The new tariffs initially saw low-value goods imported into the US slammed with additional fees.

Currently, gifts valued at under USD$100 are exempt from any tariff impacts.

Australia Post said they were working on a separate solution to allow customers to send parcels to the US via the Post Office network.

Like many other international postal services, Australia Post said it also offers a commercial service outside the traditional postal network for large export customers, which remains open.
