Residents evacuated following heavy smoke from e-bike shop fire

Fire Rescue NSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry has provided an update on an e-bike shop fire that forced the evaucation of residents in the apartment above.

Fire crews received multiple calls about a blaze at Flyebike in Chippendale just after 7am on Wednesday morning.

Dewberry said the first firefighters to arrive were confronted by “heavy fire and smoke activity on the ground floor shop.”

There are six levels of residential units above the shop, with fire crews evacuating an unknown number of residents.

“All occupants have been evacuated safely,” Dewberry said.

Paramedics attended the scene however no injuries have been reported at this stage.

It took about 40 minutes for firefighters to control the blaze.

Crews remain on the scene.

Two of the four southbound lanes on Regent St have been closed causing heavy traffic delays according to Live Traffic NSW.

Qatari Prime Minister responds following Israeli air strike

The Prime Minister of Qatar has responded after Israel’s military launched an air strike against the leaders of Hamas in the country’s capital.

Hamas say five of its members were killed in the attack in Doha, including the son of Hamas’ exiled Gaza Strip chief and top negotiator Khalil al-Hayya.

It said Israel had failed in what Hamas called an attempt to assassinate the group’s ceasefire negotiation team.

Speaking in a press conference Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani said the attack came without any warning.

“‘The attack happened at 3.46pm. The first call we had from an American officer was at 3.56pm, which is 10 minutes after the attack,” he said.

“The US Government position (is) that they (had) no knowledge about the attack nor any coordination about it, until it started to happen.

“Now, when they got the alert, when the alert has reached us, thats information that I dont know right now.”

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong condemened the attack saying it wasn’t the right thing to do.

“It’s a strike that violates Qatar’s sovereignty,” she said on Sunrise.

“It undermines or potentially damages the possibility of ceasefire and the release of hostages and obviously it risks escalation.”
