I’ve had a Dyson stick vacuum for a very long time.
My first foray into the Dyson world was actually through the British company’s haircare range, first with the highly regarded Airwrap and then the Supersonic hairdryer. Both are still mainstays in my event preparation arsenal.
Naturally, I then turned my attention to the stick vacuums and picked up an early model, which at the time felt like a huge investment for our tiny one-bedroom apartment.

But four years later, it’s still sucking up just as much dirt as it did when we bought it.
It sits hidden away in the corner of our living room and is always on hand when my partner traipses in half a beach worth of sand inside after a swim.
But it’s the mopping I’m lazy with. It would mean firing up the old bucket and mop from the laundry — after a full vacuuming session — and giving it time to dry before walking anywhere.
So when I heard Dyson was releasing the V15s Detect Submarine I couldn’t believe the conglomerate had come up with a way of combining both wet and dry elements into one. I had to try it.
The device itself, which sells for $1,549 at Dyson.com.au, looks similar to Dyson’s other stick vacuums — handheld by nature, multiple “heads” that clip onto the end and a clear bin so you can see all the dirt you’re collecting.
The difference is in one of the heads — the Submarine wet roller head — which clips onto the vacuum itself and can be filled with water to mop up spills and stains.
It took a few minutes — and watching a YouTube video — for me to work out how to fill the contraption with water (and a little bit of soap) but once I managed it the process was seamless.
And because only a small amount of water is distributed at any one time, the floor dries exceptionally fast as you move through the house.
The pack comes with a “drip tray” as well so when you’re finished you can simply pop the wet rolled head onto the drip tray so it doesn’t get any further water onto the floor.
In the vacuuming department, the Dyson V15s Detect Submarine Complete version — which is currently sold out but usually retails for $1,649 — comes with the Fluffy Optic Cleaner Head with a precisely angled beam of light that shows you the particles you can’t normally see.
This “head” actually isn’t in the standard Dyson V15s pack, which instead comes with a Hair Screw Tool to pick up long and pet hair, a Crevice Tool, Combination Tool, Wall Dok and Digital Motorbar Cleaner Head.
In some ways this is probably for the best, because the laser beam light is humbling to say the least.
The dirt and hair build up in just a few days in our apartment is cause for alarm and has certainly encouraged me to clean more regularly. Say, twice a day.
