Dash cam footage has captured the terrifying moment a truck began to jackknife on Adelaide's notoriously dangerous freeway.

The driver is being praised for preventing a potential crash after the B-double started violently swerving towards cars.

A motorist travelling behind the truck on the South Eastern Freeway captured the moment it appears to clip a kerb and starts to swerve.

The truck's trailer veers violently to the left, clipping a light pole, before hooking back towards a nearby car on the right.

Fortunately, being close to midnight, there were only a few cars on the road.

The notoriously steep South Eastern Freeway has played host to years of serious accidents and deaths.

In 2010, a man was killed when an out-of-control semi-trailer crashed into a bus stop at the base of the notoriously steep stretch of freeway.

A 2014 accident was the subject of a coronial inquest after a 41-year-old truck driver died when his vehicle crashed into a wall.

Earlier this year, tragedy was averted when the driver of a prime mover lost control and careered into an arrester bed.

And just last month a cyclist narrowly avoided death when a truck ploughed into seven other vehicles at the freeway's base.
