Sunrise hosts Nat Barr and Matt Shirvington were gobsmacked by a German tourist’s cutting Matildas sledge on live TV.

Sunrise weather presenter Sam Mac was telecasting from Circular Quay in Sydney on Thursday morning, capturing reactions to the Australian team’s heartbreaking loss in the FIFA Women’s World Cup semi final.

Sam approached the tourist, named Chris, as he was exiting a ferry to ask him what he thought of the game.

“They tried really hard - yep, sure, ” he responded.

Sam challenged his response, saying: “They did better than that, though - they inspired a nation! Don’t you think?”

Chris went on to say it was the only game he’d watched during the tournament.

“I travelled in from Europe last week - so kind of was totally out of the scene, I was no idea what was going on,” he said.

Sam was encouraged by this answer and asked: “Have they converted you, are you a fan of The Matildas now?”

Without giving a second thought, the tourist responded: “No.”

Sunrise stars Nat, Shirvo and sports presenter Mark Beretta were stunned by the answer, saying “Oh!”

Sam added: “Oh wow, we’ve been rejected!”

Not realising that he was being recorded live on-air, Chris then said: “You probably can’t use that” - prompting howls of laughter from Sam and the Sunrise crew in the studio.

“Lucky we’re not live!” Sam said.

“We’ve used it!” added Beretts.

“If anyone thought, ‘I wonder if Sam Mac’s weather is live?’ There’s your answer!” Nat said.

Sam finished the segment by saying: “There we go guys, there’s the exclusive.

“We have captured the hearts of the nation, we have inspired everyone - except the Germans!”
