It’s Christmas for fashionistas.
The wild and wacky couture of the Met Gala is on show in New York.
With a guest list personally curated by Vogue Editor, Anna Wintour, the Met Gala is the most coveted ticket in entertainment, more prestigious than the Oscars, Emmys and Baftas combined.

There’s always a theme and this year it’s “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style”
That translates to killer suits and the sartorial style of the African American community. The co-chairs include American actor, Colman Domingo, Formula One driver, Lewis Hamilton, Rihanna’s partner, A$AP Rocky and the Men’s Creative Director of Louis Vuitton, Pharrell.
Basketball legend LeBron James is an honorary chair, but is out with injury.
Fair enough, given this event is as competitive as the NBA and as involved too.
The first glimpse we get of the stars is when they leave the Mark Hotel. The hotel is 7 minutes away from the Met but the journey takes up to 45 minutes because of the traffic created by the Gala.
Anna Wintour is always the first big name to leave but this out of the box idea has everyone talking this year.
Next, the gargantuan task begins of tackling the tricky steps up to the top of the Met Museum. There is an exhibition up there, in case you were wondering, and the event is actually a fundraiser for the museum.
Fittingly, Diana Ross executed the most dramatic arrival in a white, feathered train that required 7 men to assist. This footage from Vanity Fair shows even superstar Zendaya was overawed by her brush with the legendary singer.
Zendaya herself was wearing a tribute to Ross. Celebrity stylist, Elliot Garnaut’s take; “Sometimes less is more and Zendaya proved this in ultra slick tailoring by Louis Vuitton. In a traditional zoot suit, she nailed the brief with a flawless historical reference to black dandyism”.
Unfortunately for Anna Sawai, less really was more. Someone at Louis Vuitton PR is about to pay the price with Anna donning the exact same outfit as Zendaya down to the White Lady funeral hat. Dead.
Sydney Sweeney made sure art was imitating life.. Her custom black sequinned Miu Miu gown was similar to a gown worn by Hollywood star, Kim Novak in 1967.
Sweeney is set to play Novak in the upcoming film, Scandalous with the film directed by Met-Gala co-chair, Colman Domingo. These outfits come with many messages.
Sabrina Carpenter’s Burgundy Tuxudo sans pants turned heads, as always.
While Elliot says Priyanka Chopra nailed the theme: “The PERFECT balance of costume and couture. Priyanka executed the dress code to perfection in Balmain. We need to talk about the Bulgari emerald, the size of Tasmania!!!!”
Nicole Kidman had tongues wagging with what appeared to be a cropped hair-do or what InStyle Magazine described as a two-tone cropped mullet. You can take the girl outta ‘Straya…
Fresh off six Tony nominations for her performance in a Portrait of Dorian Gray on Broadway, Sarah Snook dazzled in a tux covered in jewelled brooches.
Andre 3000 could have performed on Broadway with a literal piano stuck to this back.
Gigi Hadid was another of Elliot’s favourites.
“Gigi took historical referencing to new nights with a recreation of a gown worn by Josephine Baker, the first black actress in a feature film”, he told me.
“It was gold Miumiu perfection.”
Other notable stand-outs - Chappel Roan, Kim Kardashian, Halle Berry, Lauryn Hill and Janelle Monae.
Notable absentees - Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift were invited but had a ‘conflicting engagement’.
Notable bump - with her partner A$AP Rocky co-chairing the event, leave it to Rihanna to create a pop-culture moment with her fashion. Following her Super Bowl pregnancy announcement, her third baby bump was swathed in Marc Jacobs for the Met Gala.
PS - It was Doechii hiding her anxiety in the box.
Her short suit from Louis Vuitton voted one of the best of the night.
