The pioneering singer-songwriter had a number of chart-topping hits throughout the 1960s.

Australian music legend Col Joye has died, aged 89.

Born Colin Frederick Jacobsen, he rose to fame as the frontman of Col Joye and the Joy Boys.

Joye is also credited with “discovering” iconic Australian band the Bee Gees.

Joye had a number of successful hits including Bye Bye Baby, which topped the charts in 1959, as well as Stagger Lee and Rockin Rollin Clementine.

He went on to have a string of hits with the Joy Boys throughout the 1960s.

Joye was an original member of the popular TV program, Bandstand, with him appearing on the show regularly over 14 years.

He toured Australia alongside acts, including Judy Stone, the De Kroo Brothers, and Sandy Scott.

Joye and the band also entertained the troops in Vietnam.

In the 1970s, his career levelled-out with the popularity of surf music.

However, he did have a hit with Heaven is My Woman’s Touch in 1973.

Joye was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 1988.

In 1990, Joye suffered a major setback when he fell six metres while using a chainsaw to prune a neighbour’s tree.

He sustained significant injuries to his lower back and shoulders.

However, he managed to make a comeback to touring in 1998.
