A man has been charged with murder after a shooting outside a rural property in northern Victoria.

The 55-year-old male victim went outside his property at Numurkah near the NSW border on Thursday night before a gunshot was heard.

He was discovered injured and died at the scene.

A 58-year-old Caniambo man was later arrested and has been charged with murder.

He is due to face Shepparton Magistrates Court later on Friday.

Police say both men were known to each other.
