West Coast superstar Harley Reid urged to shift ‘mindset’ after latest fan incident

‘You’re a chance to win a game at the MCG and you’re worried about someone over the fence’

West Coast emerging superstar Harley Reid has been urged to block out the abuse from fans and focus on the footy after another incident over the weekend.

With the game on the line against Richmond, the 20-year-old slotted a monster goal on the run from outside 50 to reduce the margin to single digits.

However, with less than three minutes remaining, a frustrated Reid could be seen reacting angrily to a Tigers fan in the front row of the MCG.

It’s not the first time the former No.1 pick has reacted to a fan in the crowd, having being fined for giving a Brisbane fan the middle finger earlier this season.

Channel 7 commentator Luke Hodge said Reid needs to stop reacting and eventually they will stop.

“You’re a chance to win a game at the MCG and you’re worried about someone over the fence,” he said on The Agenda Setters.

“If you ignore them, they will stop yelling at you. It’s because you give a reaction and react back at them, that’s why fans will keep doing it.”

Fellow panellist Dale Thomas was sympathetic to Reid, but agreed it had to come out of his game.

“It’s all learnings though, you can’t control yourself instantly,” he said.

“If someone is having a go at you and you bite back, that is something you need to learn to move past.

“If you’re a kid from the bush, from Tongala, and now you’re at the MCG and someone within five metres is hurling crap at you, your natural reaction is to go back and tell them to get nicked or flip the bird, which he has done.

“(But) it has to come out of his game.”

Hodge added that fans caught going over the top should be kicked out, but insisted Reid needs to shift his mindset.

“I reckon any security guard who catches a fan abusing a player and going over the top, they should be kicked out. I’d prefer him to have his focus on winning the game,” Hodge continued.

“There’s one person on that West Coast team who is a chance of winning that game and it’s the bloke pointing at someone flipping the bird over the fence.

“His mindset should be going, jump on my back and I’m going to win this game with my teammates and then the focus is how good that win is, he is a leader, he is going to take charge of that team for the next 10 years rather than we’re talking about him and someone over the fence.”

Eagles coach Andrew McQualter labelled the abuse directed at Reid as a “joke” and urged the AFL to do more.

There have been many critics of Reid’s on-field behaviour, but McQualter staunchly backed his rising star on Monday night.

“It’s just the amount of abuse that Harley cops all the time. It’s a bit of a joke, really,” he told 7NEWS.

“He’s a 20-year-old kid, and every time he goes near the boundary line, he gets abused by people.

“I’m not sure people should be paying their money to go to the footy just to abuse young kids. I understand it’s a bit of the landscape we are in, but I think you saw it took its toll, and Harley reacted to it.

“We’ll continue to support him. I absolutely do (think the AFL need to crack down on the behaviour from fans). The live abuse from the ground is one thing, but the online abuse is a bit of a disgrace.”

McQualter also praised Reid for taking responsibility and attempting to lift his winless side to a breakthrough victory in the final quarter against Richmond.

“I thought all game, but particularly in the last 10 minutes of the game, he tried to take the team on his back and win, which is exactly what we expect from Harley, and he’s trending in the right direction,” he said.
