St Kilda is in the market for Carlton big man Tom De Koning and GWS defender Leek Aleer. The reported money they’re handing to Aleer (who has only played 22 games and is in and out the Giants team) is thought to be more than Wilkie’s contract
There is also talk the Saints are in the hunt for West Coast’s emerging superstar Harley Reid, and are also prepared to hand him a monster $25 million deal.
In the meantime, they are in a bidding war to keep their own superstar Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera.
Speaking exclusively to Channel 7, Wilkie said all the attention on him had been “pretty funny”.
He also opened up on a marathon conversation with coach Ross Lyon after the rumour emerged.
Gun 7NEWS reporter Xander McGuire said: “Talk us through what’s been a pretty big week for the club on ... And you sort of found yourself in the centre of it for at least 24 hours there about a reported disillusionment with the list strategy.
“How was that conversation with Ross that he spoke about on Wednesday night, how did it go and where’s your stance just in general?”
Wilkie said “it’s the most media attention I reckon I’ve ever got.
“So it’s pretty funny sitting back watching all the messages. But yeah, it was funny watching it all get blown over and or blown up, I guess.
“But you know I love the St Kilda footy club. I love playing. I love being the vice-captain. I love being a leader of this footy club.
“You know I speak to Ross all the time and I think I’m just like any other St Kilda person that just wants you know to get the signatures (of players), particularly Nas and Windy (Marcus Marcus Windhager) who are two key players for us and two key people in building this culture and really getting us going to that next premiership tilt.
McGuire: “Is there a general support from the boys to go after the Tom De Koning and Leek Aleer and to upgrade the list in that way?
“Because it was reported that you’re more focused on trying to get the signatures of the guys that are already here. Where does the group stand on the pursuit of those guys on pretty big money?”
Wilkie: “Well, we have to go after them. I mean, I think you look at where we are sitting on the ladder and the footy that we’ve been playing, we need to get better.
“Obviously there’s the draft but which we’ve gone too heavily over the last three years but to get free agents and trading good players who they are, that’s their job.
“You know, we’re all for it because we just want to get better as a group and we know we probably need to attract some more talent.
“So boys are all for it. So yeah, I’m looking forward to hopefully they can land some big fish. Who knows? We’ll see what happens. But yeah, that’s the only way we can get better as well as driving the culture of this group and getting those young players to fast-track their development.
“We’re playing some better footy and hopefully playing finals soon.
XM: “What did you say to Ross on that phone call? How did the conversation go?”
CW: “I think if anyone knows Ross, you don’t really say too much. He sort of talks to you. I know looking at the phone, I reckon it was 35 minutes (the call), but we had a good chat on all things.
“I know it’s the footy club and me and the boys and the group, we’re have such a good relationship that we always give feedback to each other and I always give them a sense of how the group’s feeling or how I’m feeling.
“We came out of that with no new thoughts and feelings. He knows I love this footy club and I love playing here. We just want the club to get better and I think, you know, that’s what probably what all got blown up during the week.
“I don’t want to leave. There’s not going to be a mass exodus at the footy club ... I just want this club to get better and get a couple of key signatures or one very special player. Hopefully we can get one but, who knows, time will tell.”
XM: “So just on that, have you got any inkling on where Nas might sit or Marcus Windhager?”
CW: “No, no inkling. They keep it very close to their chest.
“They’re great people, great players obviously, they’re probably two of the biggest key drivers of the footy club. They sit in that sort of middle-age bracket, still probably pretty young but they’re really connected throughout the whole group and they love it here and they just want to keep getting better and keep getting this football club better, so we’ll let their managers and the list managers do their job and I’ll stay out of it.”
