Callum Mills’ foot injury is worse than first feared with the Sydney skipper not expected to play until after the Swans round three bye.

The Swans revealed on Tuesday scans had shown Mills had torn his plantar fascia.

“Callum had been managing his plantar fasciitis well, however he required follow up imaging with the results last night revealing Callum has sustained a tear of the plantar fascia,” Sydney Swans Head of Physiotherapy and Medical Services Damian Raper said.

“After consultation with our medical team, we believe the best course of action is to spend two weeks in a boot, before reassessing Callum’s return to play program.

“Unfortunately, this means he will be unavailable to play prior to the club’s Round 3 bye.”

Mills, who could be healthy to play North Melbourne in round four on April 5, attended the captains call season launch on Monday.

He and Tom Papley (ankle) did not play in the Swans match simulation against GWS last Friday with the club saying then they hoped the pair would return to training within a week.

Papley is hoping to be fit for Friday’s trial match against the Gold Coast.

Mills did not play in Sydney’s devastating grand final loss to the Lions last year through injury.

The setback continues a torrid run with injury for Mills, who played only seven games last season.

He spent eight months on the sidelines after tearing the rotator cuff in his left shoulder in a 2023 ‘Mad Monday’ incident.

After a low-grade calf strain delayed his return, Mills finally made his comeback in round 18 against North Melbourne.

It was a hamstring injury that ended his already short 2024 campaign early, missing the Swans’ preliminary final win over Port Adelaide and their grand final defeat.
