Severe weather warning threatens AFL clash as players kept inside during warm-ups at the Gabba

The Lions and Bulldogs were close to starting their warm-ups when they were told to stay away.

Western Bulldogs and Brisbane players were stopped from entering the field of play at the Gabba ahead of their Friday night AFL clash because of a severe weather warning which includes lightning.

The two teams weren’t far off beginning their warm-ups, less than two hours before the first bounce, when AFL officials made the call to keep them inside.

The players have since been allowed onto the ground for their warm-ups and the match remains on-schedule to kick off at 7.40pm.

Late on Friday, the Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe thunderstorm warning including damaging winds and large hailstones.

The precautionary decision was made to keep the players from the field when the weather reached a 10km radius from the ground.

Players spent about 45 minutes indoors before being given the all-clear.

Bulldogs players at one stage attempted to walk up the race to peak their heads out but were sent back by security.

Speaking to 7NEWS inside the rooms before the game, Bulldogs forward Rhylee West said it was a strange feeling for a pre-game build-up.

“Yeah, just a bit delayed and not allowed outside, but we’ll just stay in here and do our thing inside,” he said during the delay, before being let out.

“No big issues, both sides have to deal with it, so it should (still) be a good night.”
