Nick Daicos ‘myth’ debunked as Kane Cornes says the Collingwood superstar can be tagged

One of the most common theories in the AFL has been exposed.

Channel 7 commentator Kane Cornes has urged Collingwood’s rivals to tag Nick Daicos in a bid to curb the influence of the superstar midfielder.

Daicos has quickly risen the ranks to be the No.1 player in the game and overwhelming Brownlow Medal favourite in just his fourth AFL season.

Many pundits believe the 22-year-old is unstoppable, and he has proven that time and time again when he breaks a tag from an opposition midfielder.

In the Round 8 loss to Geelong, Daicos was closely followed by young Irish defender Oisin Mullin for the entire match.

Despite the close checking, Daicos had 25 touches to three-quarter time and was one of the better players on the ground.

But Cats coach Chris Scott refused to drop the tag and was rewarded in the last quarter when Daicos tallied just three disposals.

His frustration also boiled over and he gave away a free kick and 50m penalty at a crucial stage.

Cornes said it was proof the superstar could be stopped.

“He had 25 to three-quarter time and he was in the top five players on the ground. You thought Chris Scott might drop the tag, but he persisted with Mullin. And he was rewarded for it,” Cornes said on Channel 7’s pre-game before Fremantle’s clash against Collingwood.

“Nick Daicos just one kick in the last quarter and Mullin was awesome. He didn’t leave his side.

“There is a myth in football, and the myth is that you can’t tag Nick Daicos. You absolutely can.

“You may not be able to stop him for four quarters, but when the game was on the line, they didn’t give it up. He was frustrated, he gave away a free kick and a 50m penalty at a crucial time.

“I am telling you, don’t go head-to-head with that man because he could single-handedly change the course of the game.”

Cornes highlighted the Magpies’ clash against Brisbane in Round 6 when the Lions tried to go head-to-head with Daicos with their own star midfielders in Lachie Neale and Hugh McCluggage.

Daicos finished with 38 touches and a goal as the Pies stormed to 52-point victory.

“At the Gabba, they went head-to-head and it did not work,” Cornes continued.

“He is too good. He will beat you one-on-one. Everyone has got to be aware, you have got to be physical and it’s got to be a disciplined approach for four quarters.”

Fellow commentator Nick Riewoldt agreed.

“He gets you with his burst of speed. He is unlike any other midfielder in the game,” he said.

“Standing on him and thinking you’ve got him covered is not enough, you have got to be anticipating when he takes off and goes and go with him.”
