‘Extremely animated’ Ross Lyon storms off on St Kilda players after quarter-time spray

The irate coach ‘eyeballed a couple of his veterans’ then ‘left a mess’ for his assistants to clean up.

Ross Lyon has stormed off on St Kilda players after delivering a quarter-time spray while trailing the Western Bulldogs.

The Saints kicked just one goal to the Dogs’ four in the first term at Marvel Stadium on Thursday night, with boos raining down from fans when the siren sounded.

And whether they were directed at their team or the umpires — or both — there was no question that Lyon was most frustrated with his players.

The veteran coach left the coaches box with two minutes left in the first quarter.

“Lyon came straight to the bench and eyeballed (Jack) Macrae and (Jimmy) Webster, a couple of his veterans,” Mitch Cleary reported.

It didn’t end there.

“He used the start of the quarter-time break to bring the entire group in,” Cleary added.

“Normally they go into their lines — midfield, back, forward. But Ross eyeballed his players, extremely animated, and then after three minutes just stormed off straight to the box and left the rest to his assistant coaches.”

Brian Taylor described Lyon has having “left a mess”.

“I think he said all that needed to be said,” Kane Cornes said, noting St Kilda had dominated at stoppages but wasted the ball.

Saints players didn’t help themselves when the second quarter got underway with Aaron Naughton, Ed Richards and Naughton again extending the Bulldogs’ lead to beyond 30 points.

Isaac Keeler broke St Kilda’s drought with the team’s second goal for the night.

Within minutes Dogs pair Buku Khamis and Sam Darcy each kicked their second to extend the margin once more.

The Saints fought hard to finish the quarter on a high with Cooper Sharman and Marcus Windhager getting on the board.

A Dogs goal with a minute remaining threatened to throw out St Kilda’s good work.

But Mason Wood quickly cancelled it out to reduce the half-time margin to 28 points.

“They probably got on top of us a little bit around the stoppage but I thought we were able to shift that back around in the last five minutes,” Saints ruck Rowan Marshall told Channel 7.

“If you can take that into this second half it’s pleasing.”

Meanwhile, Bulldogs captain Marcus Bontempelli played out the second half despite being winded by a knee flying into a contest.

The 29-year-old first went to the bench and was subsequently checked out in the rooms.

Bontempelli had seven touches to the main break under a heavy tag from Windhager, who had nine disposals to go with his goal.

“Bont’s one of the greats of the game,” Marshall said.

“As much as we can help Windy out the better but he’s doing a great job so far.”
