‘Eagle-eyed producer’ spots cryptic Harley Reid message

The eyebrow-raising comment has come at a time the rumour mill is exploding.

Emerging AFL superstar Harley Reid’s future at West Coast continues to be a massive talking point, and a recent comment he made on social media has added a little extra fuel to the fire.

Reid has reportedly put contract talks with the Eagles on hold, although his current deal expires at the end of 2026.

Things exploded during the week with Reid having another underwhelming game, spotted doing kick-ins, and only managing 13 touches in the loss to Melbourne.

In the aftermath, Essendon great Matthew Lloyd said on AFL Media that West Coast needed to move Reid on because it did not look like he wanted to be at the club.

Victorian clubs are certainly keen to lure the youngster back to his home state, and Essendon coach Brad Scott did not shy away from the interest when he recently spoke on Channel 7’s The Agenda Setters.

“He’s one of many (we’re interested in),” Scott said on The Agenda Setters.

“I mean, no, I haven’t spoken to him, but yeah, clearly the environment we’re in, if our list management team isn’t speaking to his management, then we’re slipping behind everyone else.”

Channel 7’s chief AFL reporter Mitch Cleary said the Scott comment spoke volumes about what Victorian clubs were thinking about Reid.

“That’s a contracted player who has another year after this to run at the West Coast Eagles,” Cleary said on The Tradies podcast.

“That just speaks to where clubs view this situation. How often do we hear clubs say, ‘No, he’s a contracted player. We respect that he’s a contracted player. We’d love to target a player like Harley Reid, but right now I’m not in a position to comment.’ ... Thank God for Brad for speaking his mind.”

Brad may not be the only Scott interested in Reid.

Reid was a Geelong supporter when he was younger and it’s quite possible that allegiance hasn’t died.

“Just on the Geelong-Harley Reid link, our eagle-eyed producer, Scotty ... sent a screenshot of a post from Tim Kelly’s partner, Caitlin (Miller),” Cleary revealed on Tradies.

“She did a post about Tim Kelly’s 150th game milestone, and there was 20 photos. Nine or 10 of (of those photos) were (when Kelly was at) Geelong, nine or 10 of them were West Coast.

“And Harley commented, ‘Congrats, guys, go Cats’, with a little cat emoji.

“Harley’s Instagram and social media presence is, you know, even before he got drafted, a talking point. That that was just interesting what Scotty sent into the group chat.”

Geelong, Hawthorn and Essendon are widely considered to be the leading Victorian clubs in the race for Reid.

And as things sit right now, Essendon have two top-10 draft picks, their own, and Melbourne’s, as bargaining chips.

They also have plenty of space in their salary cap to hand a juicy contract to Reid.

AFL journalist Sam McClure said: “Brad Scott has a good record of attracting the right sort of players to his teams, even when they’re not travelling that well.”

West Coast has reportedly offered Reid various mega-deals to consider, with one of the options being including a five-year extension worth around $2 million a season.
