Commentators blow up over ‘ridiculous’ decision to award Collingwood a 50m penalty for dissent

‘That’s an umpire that wanted to insert himself in the moment and got it wrong.’

The AFL world are all saying the same thing about a controversial umpiring decision during Collingwood’s clash against Fremantle on Sunday.

Dockers defender Karl Worner was penalised for a high tackle on Lachie Schultz during the second quarter at the MCG.

But while that decision was controversial, it was the resulting 50m penalty that left commentators and fans up in arms.

As Worner looked up to the big screen for a replay of the incident, he said something to the umpire and gestured to the scoreboard.

“50m, pointing at the scoreboard. Dissent,” the umpire said.

That gave Schultz the easiest of goals to put the Pies up by 12 points midway through the term.

As replays rolled of Worner’s “point” to the scoreboard, the Channel 7 commentators couldn’t believe the decision.

“He really didn’t point at the scoreboard, he used his hands up as if to say ‘oh c’mon,” Brian Taylor said.

Nick Riewoldt added: “It wasn’t demonstrative. That’s just ridiculous, selective umpiring.”

Speaking at half-time, Riewoldt still couldn’t believe the call.

“That’s at complete odds with what we have seen with the dissent rule and how it has been interpreted this year,” he said.

“That’s an umpire that wanted to insert himself in the moment and got it wrong.”

Social media lit up after the incident.

“EMBARRASSING for that umpire,” former West Coast player Will Schofield said.

“Deadset the worst officiating in a very long time!” one fan said.

“Ridiculous,” another said.

“Maybe one day they’ll try not to make it about themselves,” another said.

“Umpiring department should have to come out and explain themselves and why this was paid and the previous 50 weren’t. Disgrace,” another said.

While Fremantle fans felt aggrieved at the time of the incident, they were singing at the end of the match after the Dockers kicked the final four goals to steal a stunning one-point win.
