Adam Simpson rules out AFL coaching return in 2026 as Nathan Buckley firms for Melbourne job

‘It’s just weird going through the media to do it all. Normally it’s done behind closed doors.’

West Coast premiership coach Adam Simpson has ruled himself out of the running for the Melbourne job, revealing he is “just not in the right headspace”.

The 49-year-old’s name was thrust back into calculations for an AFL senior coaching role when the Demons sacked Simon Goodwin last week alongside Nathan Buckley and John Longmire.

Buckley has emerged as the favourite, a position solidified by Longmire and Simpson both declaring they are not ready to rejoin the caper.

“I don’t want to coach next year. I think I’ll give it a spell. I was just thinking through it over the weekend and ‘Horse’ (Longmire) has done the same thing,” Simpson told SEN on Monday morning.

“It just doesn’t feel like it’s the right time to be available.”

He confirmed he had not yet received a call from Melbourne, who are organising a committee to select the next coach, and did not want to be swayed.

“Sometimes you wait for these things because you might think ’oh, I’m not interested’, but then you get the phone call and you go ‘oh, hang on, I’m wanted’, and then you sort of pivot in a different way,” Simpson said.

“But I’ve had a good think about it and I’m just not in the right headspace with it. I’m enjoying all this (media roles).

“The passion to go through all the process, because once you get approached it’s turbo and you need to really be prepared. I’m not really prepared and not in the right headspace.

“I’ll continue to do this (breakfast radio) if this is part of my brief next year because all of these things aren’t done either, but I feel like that’s the path I’m taking at the moment.”

Simpson joked he expected to be linked to Carlton after recently catching a plane with new CEO Graham Wright.

“I was waiting for that to get out because we just happened to be on the same plane,” he said.

“You talk to a lot of clubs but I have not spoken to Melbourne about coaching at all.

“I haven’t thought that deeply about it ... I’m just going to park it and get in front of it. If it did come my way, it’d be a no.

“It’s just weird going through the media to do it all. Normally it’s done behind closed doors but it is what it is and we move on.”

Simpson said there is not yet a “burning desire” to coach again, acknowledging again things might change if he is chased next year — “or it could be never”.

Speaking last week, Buckley described the Melbourne opportunity as “quite compelling”.

“There’s a lot that needs to settle. Big club, storied history,” he said.

“Experience in the playing group is unquestioned and I like their young group of players as well.

“In that sense, there is a compelling case there. But there’s plenty of water to go under the bridge.”

Collingwood assistant coach Hayden Skipworth appears the best of the untested options.

Melbourne interim Troy Chaplin has already confirmed he will not pursue the full-time role.
