A 22-year-old woman has died with critical injuries suffered in a domestic violence assault in Johnston last month.

Neighbours had called Triple-0 to try and get the woman help.

A woman has died from critical injuries she suffered in an alleged assault last month.

Neighbours called Triple-0 to report an incident unfolding in a home at Johnston, a suburb in the east of the NT satellite city, Palmerston, about 8pm on May 21.

The 22-year-old woman was found fighting for life when emergency services arrived.

She was taken to the Royal Darwin Hospital in a critical condition.

The young victim has since died in hospital, NT Police said on Saturday.

Her exact cause of death remains unknown, but a report will be prepared for the coroner as part of ongoing investigations.

A 22-year-old man, known to the woman, was arrested at the scene when police responded to the disturbance last month.

He was taken to the Palmerston Watch House, and later charged with aggravated assault.

He appeared before Darwin Local Court last Monday, and remains before the courts.
