A man known to the woman handed himself in to police after allegedly fleeing the scene.

A pedestrian has been slammed by a car in an alleged domestic violence incident on Thursday.

The woman was struck while walking down a road in Borroloola, a remote fishing town in northeast Northern Territory, at about 2pm.

Her ankle was seriously injured on impact, and she was taken to the local health clinic by responding police.

The victim was then set to be flown to Darwin Hospital, nearly 1000km away, for further treatment.

The alleged offender was known to the woman and fled the scene before police arrived, NT Police said.

The 51-year-old man handed himself in to the Borroloola Police Station and was arrested on Friday morning.

Police will allege the incident was domestic violence.
