Another teenager was assaulted and also had to be hospitalised.

A 17-year-old Wangaratta boy is fighting for life after being stabbed in northeast Victoria.

The Newport teenager and an 18-year-old from Wangaratta were walking on White St, Wangaratta at 2.20am on Friday when they were approached by an unknown gang of offenders.

The 17-year-old was stabbed and sustained life-threatening injuries.

He was airlifted to hospital.

The 18-year-old was assaulted and also had to be taken to hospital.
