Universal co-founder Greg Josephson allegedly stabbed to death at house party farewelled

The Brisbane father was found dead in his home last month, just a few doors down from where his funeral was held.

A multimillionaire co-founder of a national clothing chain has been laid to rest just metres from where he was allegedly fatally stabbed by a teenager at a house party.

Family and friends on Monday gathered at St Agatha’s Catholic Church in Brisbane to farewell Greg Josephson, who established Australian fashion retailer Universal Store.

The packed funeral service was held in the upmarket inner-city Brisbane suburb of Clayfield, close to the house where Josephson was found dead in late June.

Queensland Police discovered his body in the home amid a party involving about 30 young people.

A 15-year-old boy known to Josephson was charged with murder.

There were emotional scenes on Monday as loved ones remembered Josephson before the service concluded with wife Tamra cutting a sombre figure.

The service was presided over by Father Anthony Mellor, with Josephson’s relatives Michael, Andrew, Martin and John Josephson as pallbearers, an online mass booklet said.

In prayers of the faithful, relative Katie Josephson said the family had deep gratitude for Josephson’s blessed life and his presence in their lives was a “sacred gift”.

“He lived his life as an embodiment of love,” the mass booklet read.

“While his physical form may have now changed, may his divine spirit live on through all life.”

Josephson was found dead after police were called to the home after 8pm on June 26.

The alleged killer was located on a nearby street with an injury, police said.

The 15-year-old boy was taken into custody and later charged with one count of murder and refused police bail.

He was remanded in custody after his case was called in a children’s court on June 27, when it was adjourned until September 2.

Josephson founded Universal Store with his brother Michael in 1999.

The national apparel retailer was acquired by a group of private equity investors in 2018 for a reported $100 million and two years later the business went public on the ASX.

The company is valued at about $570 million.
