The author of a much-loved vampire novel series that was adapted for screens has died aged 66, with fans expressing their love and grief online.

L.J Smith, author of The Vampire Diaries, has died aged 66.

Smith, whose real name was Lisa Jane Smith, passed away on March 8 after a long battle with illness, a statement from her family.

Smith passed “peacefully” after an illustrious career that made her a New York Times bestselling author.

She penned more than 29 books over the years, but was best known for her two hit book series The Vampire Diaries and The Night World.

“Her novels not only entertained, but also offered solace and inspiration, making her a cherished companion to readers around the world,” the statement on Smith’s website said.

“Lisa was a kind and gentle soul, whose brilliance, creativity, resilience and empathy illuminated the lives of her family, friends and fans alike.

“She will be remembered for her imaginative spirit, her pioneering role in supernatural fiction, and her generosity, warmth and heart, both on and off the page.”

Smith’s career skyrocketed when The Vampire Diaries was adapted into a TV Series.

The TV adaptation, which launched in 2009, starred Nina Dobrev, Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley.

It was a resounding hit with fans, with the show running for eight seasons.

Online, lovers of Smith’s work shared their grief, paying tribute to the author who created worlds that their minds escaped in.

“I am shocked to hear that L. J. Smith, author of The Vampire Diaries, The Secret Circle and Night World, passed away,” one person wrote.

“I personally thank author L.J. Smith, who passed at 66, for writing the books that led to The Vampire Diaries (TV series),” wrote another.

“I can’t imagine my world without Damon & The Vampire Diaries. L.J. Smith, what a difference your life made in millions of others!”

A third person thanked Smith for gifting them the love of reading.

“I cannot believe we only just heard about L.J. Smith passing. Her Order of the Night World & Secret Circle series truly began my thirst for reading, my enjoyment of writing & fantasy. Her Vampire Diaries series helped create an amazing TV series that many enjoyed!
