The 16-year-old had reportedly been playing with a homemade gun.

A teenage boy is fighting for life in hospital after reportedly shooting himself while playing with a homemade gun.

Emergency services were called to a property on Glen Alvie Street, Seaford, in Melbourne’s southeast, about 4.30pm on Sunday after reports a gun had been fired.

Paramedics arrived to find a 16-year-old boy at the home with a gunshot wound.

He was rushed to Alfred Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition six days later.

It’s believed the boy was at a friend’s home at the time of the shooting.

Police believe the shooting was accidental and are looking into who owns the gun and if the weapon was registered.

Authorities are not looking for anyone else in relation to the incident.

7NEWS understands the boy is well known to police and has a long history of violent offending.

He was one of three teenagers who ambushed Glen Eira student, Benjamin Phikhohpoom, outside his school in 2023.
