Australian police officer investigated over assassination celebration posts

A senior South Australian police officer is under investigation over social media posts celebrating the assassination of controversial US political activist Charlie Kirk.

South Australian Police have launched an inquiry into the comments made by the 34-year veteran of the force, who is understood to be a sergeant.

The officer, described as a prolific user of social media, posted on Facebook about Kirk’s assassination, writing: “Amongst all Gaza, Ukraine, Trump news, sometimes something wonderful happens.”

SA Police confirmed to 7NEWS it is “aware of the social media posts, and they are now subject to an investigation under the Police Complaints Disciplinary Act”.

Police said there would be no further comment.

Kirk, a 31-year-old married father of two, author and right-wing political activist, was shot dead while speaking at a college campus in Utah. A 22-year-old man has been arrested over the killing.

The case has sparked concern about the celebration of political violence.

“I’m worried that anyone, left, right or middle or whatever, looks at the murder of a man and celebrates it,” Labor Party Minister Tom Koutsantonis said.

“This is about a man who got assassinated for speaking.

“If we can’t talk to each other, what’s the use? We’re better than that. Our systems are better than that.

“We should deplore that kind of violence.”

Koutsantonis said politics and violence simply don’t mix, expressing faith in SA Police to deal with the investigation appropriately.
