Sharp’s Bakery in Birchip, Victoria wins The Great Australian Vanilla Slice Triumph

It’s official. Here’s where you can find the country’s best vanilla slice.

A bakery located in regional Victoria has been crowned home to the country’s best vanilla slice for the seventh time.

Sharp’s Bakery in Birchip took home the top prize at the prestigious Great Australian Vanilla Slice Triumph in Merbein, Victoria on Saturday.

The family-run bakery is no stranger to the competition, having last won in 2022 and six times before that.

Owner Brad Sharp, who has been working with his father at the bakery for about 30 years, said the judges had no feedback about their winning slice.

“We actually asked them this year was there anything that we could improve and they reckon it was spot on so we’ll probably try and replicate that again next year,” he told www.20304050.best.

If he had to pinpoint exactly what makes his vanilla slice so special, Sharp said it was all about the structure and integrity of the pastry and custard.

“Our pastry is just beautiful and fresh and breaks in your mouth as you bite into it so your custard doesn’t squeeze out,” he said.

“And you have to have the custard beautifully light and fluffy and the icing not sticky to touch and not too thick and nice and sweet.”

Before the bakery began making a name for itself and winning the coveted title of Australia’s best vanilla slice, Sharp said he was making about 2000 slices a year.

Now they make about 45,000.

“We’ll kick off with 250 to 300 today, there’ll be caravans lined up everywhere I imagine.

“Driving home from Mildura yesterday I reckon we would have passed 200 caravans all heading up to the Mundi Mundi Music Festival, at Broken Hill, so I’m sure they’ll all be calling on their way.”

Sharp’s parents bought the bakery back in 1977 and he and his wife took over about four years ago.

His father is coming up to his 50th year working at the bakery.

Always eager to keep pushing themselves to be the best they can be, Sharp’s Bakery has their sights set on the Baking Association of Australia’s (BAA) Baking Show in February.

“They run one … for the best vanilla slice, best hot cross bun and we’ll be entering that one again,” Sharp said.

Banana Boogie Bakery in South Australia took home second place in the Great Australian Vanilla Slice Triumph while another Victorian establishment, Sunraysia Bread and Butter Bakery, came third.
