Record swells, gale-force winds and fire threat set to pound South Australia

Nearly 30mm of rain is expected across the state through the weekend.

Southern South Australia, including Adelaide, is bracing for a weekend of severe weather, with damaging winds, heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and potentially record-breaking sea levels and wave heights forecast.

After enduring the driest start to the year on record across much of the state’s agricultural regions, the Bureau of Meteorology is warning of powerful wind gusts between 90km/h and 120km/h.

Ocean conditions are also set to become hazardous, with coastal storm surges forecast to generate swells between six and nine metres.

While dangerous, these powerful waves could also help clear the toxic algae bloom that has plagued South Australian coastlines since March.

The State Emergency Service (SES) is urging residents, particularly those in Adelaide Hills and areas surrounded by trees, to remain on high alert.

Trees weakened by prolonged drought may be more likely to fall or shed large branches during the strong winds.

“The rapid onset of destructive or damaging winds is often the main reason for damage to property and is responsible for bringing down power lines, causing power disruptions,” SES State Duty Officer Craig Brassington said.

“The SES will always be on call to support communities in need however, I encourage people to take proactive action now to prepare their properties for the winter months.

“We encourage people to visit the SES website to undertake some simple, proactive steps which can contribute to minimising potential storm damage to homes and properties.”

The SES is advising residents to trim overhanging tree branches; clear gutters, downpipes and drains of debris, and secure loose outdoor items such as furniture and children’s play equipment.

Meanwhile, the Country Fire Service (CFS) is warning that dry conditions coupled with strong winds are creating ideal conditions for fires to spread.

“Dry conditions across the state, combined with strong winds forecast for this weekend, significantly heighten the risk of fires spreading out of control,” said CFS State Duty Commander Ann Buesnel.

“We are urging the community to remain vigilant. If you are planning activities like burn offs or campfires, especially near scrub or timbered vegetation, please assess conditions carefully and take appropriate safety precautions.”
