Beloved father dies two weeks after being hospitalised during dramatic Adelaide arrest

Gaurav Kundi, 42, has had his life support switched off.

A man has died two weeks after a dramatic arrest in Adelaide’s eastern suburbs that left him in a critical condition with a brain injury.

Gaurav Kundi, 42, from Modbury North had his life support switched off on Thursday and died surrounded by his family.

Kundi was hospitalised after police attempted to arrest him on Payneham Rd at Royston Park where police allege they witnessed an “altercation” between Kundi and a woman.

During the arrest, Kundi’s condition declined and he “became unresponsive”.

Kundi was rushed to hospital, where his family were told later he had an “unrecoverable” brain injury.

A woman, who was at the scene, alleges that Kundi was restrained with a knee to his neck by police.

Kundi’s arrest and outcome sparked a commissioner’s inquiry, where SA Police Commissioner Grant Stevens told ABC Radio Adelaide the inquiry would be conducted “on top of” an investigation by Major Crime and the internal investigation section detectives.

The inquiry will review SA Police’s policies, practices, procedures including training in relation to responding to incidents.

SA Police said no one was shot, and no police taser was deployed at the scene.

Media in his home country of India have compared the arrest to George Floyd case in the US in 2020.

Floyd, a 46-year-old Black American man, was murdered by a Minneapolis police officer, Derek Chauvin, who pressed his knee and the weight of his body against Floyd’s neck.

Media in India have compared Kundi’s death to George Floyd who also died after a police arrest.
