Powered parachuter plunges 20m to death in horror accident near Innisfail

A 63-year-old man has plunged to his death in a horror powered parachuting accident.

Emergency crews were called to a serious aviation incident on Polich Rd at Mena Creek, near Innisfail in Queensland, just before 5.40pm on Monday.

A man from nearby Utchee Creek suffered critical injuries when he reportedly fell about 20m to the ground from a powered parachute.

He was flown to Cairns Hospital, about one-and-a-half hours drive away, but died during the emergency flight to hospital, Queensland Police said.

The accident has sent shockwaves through the local powered parachuting community.

Police and aviation authorities are working to piece together what led to the fatal incident.
