A group of young teens has been taken into custody after a violent altercation erupted at a shopping centre.

Police were called to the Westfield Shopping Centre Helensvale at the Gold Coast in Queensland about 2.45pm on Wednesday afternoon, following reports of a disturbance involving several young people.

Initial investigations suggest one of the youths allegedly assaulted a man in his 60s before a broader brawl broke out, drawing in multiple individuals.

The man suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was treated by paramedics at the shopping centre.

Security guards and a police officer were also allegedly assaulted during the chaos, police said.

Several youths were taken into custody and are assisting police with inquiries.

Footage obtained by 7NEWS shows more than a dozen officers were needed to make the arrests.

Multiple store owners told 7NEWS they were terrified during the chaos, with one shop even barricading customers inside including a mum and her baby to keep them safe.

Investigations are ongoing.
