Perth’s Leopold Hotel confirmed to be closing within weeks

The venue provided inspiration for the AC/DC classic Highway to Hell.
The Leopold Hotel in Bicton, Perth is closing having reportedly been part of the inspiration for AC/DC’s Highway To Hell.

An iconic Australian pub is set to close within weeks after more than a century of serving cold beers.

Last drinks at the Leopold Hotel, in Perth’s southern suburb of Bicton, will be poured in late October.

“We can confirm that the Leopold Hotel will be closing in October at the conclusion of our lease term,” hotel spokesperson Mel Clifton said.

“We have loved serving our local community over the years and would like to thank our loyal customers.”

The “Leo” was built just outside Fremantle on Canning Hwy in 1907.

Canning Hwy, and the pubs along it, reportedly inspired the song Highway to Hell by Australian rock legends AC/DC.

“For years, (frontman) Bon (Scott) walked this iconic southern stretch of Canning Hwy from the Leopold Hotel ... to Fremantle, and AC/DC lit up the Raffles Hotel with legendary gigs,” Perth Festival artistic director Iain Grandage said in 2019.

The Leopold has been a casual place for a drink and meal with friends, a space to watch the game on its big screens, have a flutter, and catch live music.

Clifton said “we will provide employment for all team members”.

It was not immediately clear what is planned for the site.
