A person has died in an apartment fire in Melbourne‘s east.

Witnesses reported flames coming from the second level of the building, with multiple calls to emergency services about 7.55pm on Monday.

Police and fire crews arrived at the apartment block on Bishop St, Box Hill, and managed to enter the apartment.

One resident was found inside and died at the scene.

The remaining apartment residents were safely evacuated.

Firefighters managed to control the blaze within 15 minutes.

The fire does not appear to be suspicious at this stage, police said, however an arson chemist will examine the cause of the fire.
