A woman has died after she was hit by a car while crossing the road.

The 85-year-old woman was struck by a passing car while crossing the Princes Highway at Springvale — in Melbourne’s south-east — just after 2pm on Saturday.

She was crossing the Princes Hwy near Smith St when she was hit by a car travelling north, Victoria Police said.

The 78-year-old driver of the vehicle, from Wheelers Hill, stopped and rendered aid to the woman.

Despite best efforts from the driver and paramedics, she died at the scene.

Victoria Police are now investigating the cause of the crash.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, who has CCTV or dashcam footage, or any other information that could assist, are urged to contact police.
