The victim’s injuries include multiple fractures, and he was taken to the North-West Regional Hospital, where he remains in a critical but stable condition.

It was initially difficult to confirm who the victim was — police appealed to the public for help, and were able to identify the man on Wednesday.

The driver and sole occupant of the car was taken to hospital with a minor injury but was later discharged.

Police and State Emergency Services were called to the scene, with the eastbound lane of the highway closed for some time and traffic diverted.

“Police would like to thank those members of the public who assisted at the crash prior to emergency services arrival,” police said.

Officers investigating the incident are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed or captured on camera a man dressed in dark clothing on the Bass Hwy near the Round Hill Lighthouse before the crash.

Anyone with information or dash cam footage is asked to contact police.
