Passenger killed in car and ute crash on dirt road in north Queensland

The teenager behind the wheel of the car was taken to hospital.

A passenger in a car has died in a collision with a utility vehicle on a dirt road.

The 64-year-old man was travelling in the car when it crashed with the ute on Herberton Petford Rd at Irvinebank — near Mareeba — — about 1pm on Saturday.

The Atherton man suffered critical injuries and died at the scene.

The car “crashed into (the ute) driving in the opposite direction”, Queensland Police said.

The 19-year-old Atherton man behind the wheel of the car suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Atherton Hospital.

The two people travelling inside the ute were assessed by paramedics at the scene.

They sustained minor injuries and did not require hospitalisation.

Queensland Police will investigate the circumstances of the crash.
