A 15-year-old boy from West Woombye and a 17-year-old boy from Beerwah were arrested on Thursday and charged with murder.
Detective Inspector David Toohey said Queensland Police used “a number of strategies” including “following phone evidence” to track the accused teens.
The 17-year-old was arrested after getting off a bus in Toowoomba and the 15-year-old was arrested at a home in Chermside on Brisbane’s north.
The new detail emerged during a hearing at Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Thursday where it was revealed the 17-year-old’s parents are both in custody.
Lawyer Luke Bull told the court police served DNA notice to the teenager’s grandmother because “both of his parents were currently imprisoned”.
Police said the grandmother was acting as his guardian.
Duty lawyer Michael Robinson, representing the 15-year-old, said his client’s parents had also not been contacted and a potential foster carer had been served instead.
The court heard the younger teen had been under long-term care of the Department of Child Safety.
Police prosecutor Mark Burrell withdrew the DNA application after objections but Acting Magistrate Michael Bice said police could make another application in the future.
Deputy Queensland Premier and local MP Jarrod Bleijie said the community had been shaken by the “sickening” alleged crime.
Bleijie said under the Crisafulli government’s tough adult crime laws, any juvenile convicted of murder in Queensland will serve mandatory life imprisonment.
The case has been adjourned to the Children’s Court on September 10.
Both teenagers remain in custody and were not required to appear.
