A man has died in a single vehicle crash near Tamworth.

The 20-year-old man was riding a motorcycle and crashed into a guard rail on the New England Highway at Kootingal about 1.30am on Thursday.

He was treated by paramedics but died at the scene.

A crime scene was established, and police are investigating the crash.
