After trying to backtrack on admissions he sexually abused eight teen patients, a former psychologist has been found guilty of molesting a ninth.

The 59-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, indecently assaulted and raped a 15-year-old in his office on the state’s north coast in mid-2017.

He was found guilty of the historical sexual assault by a NSW District Court jury on Thursday after a day of deliberations.

The teen attended two counselling sessions with the now convicted sex offender.

At the first session, the 59-year-old watched pornography on his phone and suggested the boy visit a nude beach to relieve stress, the jury heard during the trial in June.

It was during the second session when the teen was molested on a couch.

“All of a sudden there was just intense pain and I couldn’t stop crying - I’d never felt pain like that before,” he told crown prosecutor Steve Wilkinson.

The psychologist pleaded not guilty to indecent assault and aggravated sexual assault of the juvenile, and denied anything untoward had occurred.

The victim told the court he did not return to counselling and did not tell anyone for years because the psychologist had threatened to kill him if he spoke out about the incident.

At trial, prosecutors showed jurors alleged admissions made by the man to sexually abusing eight other patients, attempting to prove a tendency to act in a certain way.

The 59-year-old claims he was coerced by his lawyers into making the admissions in 2019.

He will seek to overturn the conviction and sentence for these older offences in the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal, Judge Peter McGrath heard during pre-trial discussions in June.

At the time, defence barrister Anita Betts tried unsuccessfully to prevent admissions regarding the eight patients being used as evidence during the 2025 trial.

She told the judge the sheer number of complainants was “overwhelming” and would prejudice the jury.

McGrath disagreed, allowing the evidence at trial.

The 59-year-old will face a sentence hearing on September 26.
