NSW government plans to lift construction zone speed limits when workers absent

Frustrated drivers may soon get relief from those annoying construction zone speed limits when no one's actually working on the road.

Construction zone speed limits to be removed

NSW drivers could soon be spared from slowing down through construction zones when no workers are present, under new legislation being considered by the Minns government.

The proposed changes would remove worksite speed limits outside construction hours where it’s deemed safe to do so, addressing a long-standing frustration for motorists across the state.

The issue has been a sore point for many drivers who are required to reduce their speed through construction zones even when no work is taking place.

If the legislation successfully passes through Parliament, a new system managing construction zone speed limits will be introduced next year.

The move represents a significant shift in how NSW manages road safety around construction sites, potentially allowing normal speed limits to resume during non-working hours.

Details about how authorities will determine when it’s safe to lift speed restrictions, and which construction zones will be eligible for the changes, are expected to be outlined as the legislation progresses through Parliament.
