In the aftermath, demonstrators stormed the parliament building in Kathmandu and set it ablaze. The residence of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli was among numerous politicians’ homes and government buildings torched by angry crowds.

Adding to the chaos, 900 inmates have escaped from two prisons during the widespread rioting.

Despite the government reversing a ban on social media yesterday and the Prime Minister’s resignation, the violent protests have shown few signs of slowing.

Nepal’s army has now warned it may step in to take control of the streets as the situation continues to deteriorate.

The United Nations has urged restraint, condemning the use of excessive force while also expressing concern about the fires and reports of attacks on government officials.

The Australian government is echoing calls for de-escalation and warning Aussies in Nepal to avoid the demonstrations. Officials have expressed condolences to the families of the protesters who were killed.

Australian officials are closely monitoring the rapidly evolving situation as the violent unrest continues to grip the South Asian nation.
