A woman has died and a child has been injured after an out-of-control car ploughed into several people in Melbourne’s east.
Police said the Toyota Yaris hit three people before crashing through a fence on Coleman Rd in Wantirna South about 12.20pm on Thursday.
A 60-year-old man, 59-year-old woman and two-year-old boy were walking along the footpath when the car mounted the kerb and hit them from behind.

Superintendent Justin Goldsmith said the car had been on the footpath — a downhill section of the road — for 40m to 50m before hitting the trio.
The woman died at the scene.
The man was rushed to The Alfred Hospital in critical condition, while the boy was taken to Royal Children’s Hospital with serious injuries.
Goldsmith said the 91-year-old woman behind the wheel did not stop after the collision, instead continuing out of control for about 200 metres before hitting a street sign and coming to rest in a nearby reserve.
She was not seriously injured but has been taken to hospital as a precaution.
The woman has not been interviewed yet.
Goldsmith said the woman sustained minor scratches but appeared emotionally shaken.
It remains unclear whether any charges will be laid at this stage.
Footage taken from a 7NEWS helicopter footage shows an SES tent set up next to a broken fence at a playground.
“The exact circumstances surrounding the collision are yet to be determined and Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives will investigate,” police said.
They earlier said the incident is not believed to be intentional.
A witness said at least seven police cars and six ambulances were spotted rushing to the scene.
Anyone who witnessed the incident, has dashcam footage or any other information is urged to come forward.
Coleman Rd has been closed in both directions between Stud Rd and Lewis Rd.
