Detours are in place as emergency services work at the scene.

A five-vehicle smash is causing traffic chaos for city-bound motorists on Thursday morning.

Four lanes have been closed on the Princes Fwy at Laverton, near Kororoit Creek Rd, in Melbourne’s southwest, where the crash occurred just after 7am.

Delays of up to an hour are expected for motorists, with queues from Hoppers Crossing, Transport Victoria said.

Four cars and a truck crashed, but only one person was injured.

They were taken to hospital with minor injuries, Victoria Police said.

“Traffic is able to pass the incident using the emergency lane under the direction of our Incident Response Service,” Transport Victoria said.

“Our signals team is monitoring conditions in the area and will adjust traffic lights to minimise congestion on surrounding roads.

“Drivers heading towards the city from the southwest should consider detouring through Hoppers Crossing, Truganina and Laverton North to avoid congestion on the freeway.”

Trains on the Werribee Line are also recommended for people heading towards the heading towards the CBD or inner-western suburbs.

It is unclear when the closed lanes will re-open, and traffic will only return to normal once it is safe to do so.
