A man has been found seriously injured on the balcony of a unit, with seven people arrested over the “confronting” incident.

Police were called to Dow St in Port Melbourne at about 4.55am on Friday after receiving reports of a serious assault and the possible sound of a gunshot.

The AirWing was dispatched alongside officers on the ground, who quickly cordoned off the area.

Officers entered a property and walked upstairs to a communal BBQ area where they found a 33-year-old man with “various serious injuries” to his body, Detective Inspector Adam Tilley said.

He was taken to hospital, while two women and five men all aged in their 30s, were arrested at a nearby home.

They are currently being processed at a police station.

Tilley said police found a firearm in the BBQ area as well as several other items of interest.

The attack is believed to be targeted and the people involved are thought to be known to each other.

“It’s an unfortunate incident that has occurred here,” Tilley said.

“A firearm has been located so we’re not looking for an outstanding offender in the community.”

The offenders were known to police, but their motive is unclear.

“We’re still yet to ascertain exactly what’s occurred here,” Tilley said.

“We have to review CCTV footage, speak to further witnesses and neighbours.”

Tilley would not confirm whether the victim had been shot or what kind of injuries he sustained, but said he was not cooperating with police.

He said the incident would have been “extremely confronting” for any of the neighbours to see or hear.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information has been urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
