Man dies after forgotten cooking fills Guildford home in Sydney’s west with smoke

Emergency services rushed to the smoke-filled home in the early hours of Sunday.

A man has tragically died despite managing to evacuate his smoke-filled Sydney apartment.

Emergency services rushed to a block of apartments on Calliope St, in the western Sydney suburb of Guildford, around 3.45am on Sunday to find two people had managed to flee the home.

Despite the best efforts of paramedics, one of the two people who had left the unit became critically unwell from smoke inhalation and died at the scene.

The man is believed to be aged in his 60s.

Fire and Rescue NSW confirmed the two people had managed to escape the unit on their own however the smoke inside the house had been significant. There was no fire in the unit.

Firefighters confirmed unattended cooking in kitchens were a frequent emergency they attended to.

FRNSW did not confirm what type of cooking appliance was involved in the incident.
