A 98-year-old man has died after being hit by a ute.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Cessnock Rd and Kilaben St, Awaba — about 30 minutes south-west of Newcastle — at about 7pm on Sunday.

The man died at the scene while the 49-year-old male driver was taken to John Hunter Hospital for mandatory testing.

A crime scene has been established and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
