M5 Tunnel closed as car catches fire with major delays expected in peak-hour traffic

Motorists are warned to use alternative routes or expect lengthy delays.

A major Sydney tunnel has been closed and peak traffic delays are expected after a car erupted in flames.

The M5 East Cooks River Tunnel is closed citybound at Mascot after a car caught fire at about 6.27am on Wednesday.

Emergency and traffic crews rushed to the scene and traffic has begun backing up towards Sydney Airport.

Motorists should consider using the Princes Highway or Marsh Street off ramps instead.

Transport NSW has told motorists to expect delays and to consider using alternate routes, including the Princes Hwy or Marsh St off ramps, instead.

“Motorists should also allow extra travel time as eastbound traffic is heavy in the area,” they said.

“Use an alternative route, plan your journey, expect delays.”

Diversions are in place and motorists can exit at Marsh St and use Airport Dr, Qantas Dr, General Holmes Dr, Mill Pond Rd to Southern Cross Dr.
