Investigation underway after 41-year-old Yasin Odeh found dead on Fitzroy River in Central Queensland

The man was seen in the same clothes three days before his body was discovered.

An investigation into an “unexplained death” is underway after a body was found at a riverbank in Central Queensland.

Yasin Odeh, 41, was discovered half-submerged on the edge of the Fitzroy River near Wharf St at Depot Hill in Rockhampton about 12pm on Saturday.

Queensland Police said the Rockhampton man was last seen wearing the same clothes three days earlier.

CCTV shows him walking past a business about 3am on Wednesday.

Senior Sergeant Kevin Mawdsley said Odeh had left Pete’s Place, a hostel where he had been staying for several months, about 2.45am that day.

He had been staying at the Kent St address alone, and his tenancy was about to end as he was preparing to move out.

Police have seized his belongings from the residence.

Mawdsley said Odeh was an Australian citizen, born in Brisbane, had been living in Rockhampton for the past few years, and did not have a criminal history.

His family in Brisbane have been informed.

A postmortem examination will be conducted to determine the cause of death, which Mawdsley described as “unexplained”.

Local resident Debra Ward told The Courier Mail the bushland where the body was found is known for drug use and sits close to a tent city where homeless people gather.

Investigators are appealing for anyone who may have seen Odeh between Wednesday and Saturday to come forward.
